WHICH STORY ABOUT SAFIKADA DO YOU BELIEVE?
But whose love was forbidden to Safikada, and for whom did she give up her life? The answer depends on the legend you choose to believe.
One version says that the beautiful granddaughter of Ferhat Pasha loved a lower-ranking vizier soldier; another version claims her love was an Austrian soldier, whom her family considered an occupier.
For centuries, the people of Banja Luka have retold the story that Safikada took her own life by standing in front of the cannon that marked noon every day at the Kastel fortress.
Safikada's grave is located near the Ferhadija Mosque, and for centuries, candles have been lit there for good luck in love. Whether legend, myth, or truth, this story lives on among the local population and has attracted tourists for decades. She has been called the Juliet of Banja Luka.
Safikada is also the name of the first opera produced by the National Theatre of the Republic of Srpska. The legend was brought to life on stage by more than 80 artists, depicting Safikada standing in front of the cannon, dressed in bridal attire, as she gave up her life.
