The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest and most beloved cocktails in the world.
Elegantly simple yet rich in flavor, this cocktail is the perfect choice for those who appreciate classic, serious drinks with character.
Although the original recipe calls for Angostura bitters, they can be hard to find in some places — but there’s an easy and delicious homemade alternative.
OLD FASHIONED – HOMEMADE VERSION
Ingredients (for 1 serving):
50 ml bourbon or rye whiskey
1 brown sugar cube (or 1 teaspoon simple syrup)
2–3 drops of homemade bitter substitute*
A few drops of water or soda
Ice (preferably a large cube or sphere)
Orange peel for garnish
Homemade Substitute for Angostura Bitters:
If you don’t have Angostura bitters, you can create a similar aromatic blend using ingredients from your kitchen.
Mix together:
A few drops of vanilla extract
A bit of grated orange zest (or a few drops of orange juice)
A pinch of ground cloves or nutmeg
This mixture will give the cocktail a comparable spicy and citrusy note.
Preparation:
Place the sugar cube in a glass and add a few drops of the bitter substitute along with a splash of water.
Muddle the sugar until dissolved.
Add the whiskey and stir well.
Add a large ice cube (or a few smaller ones).
Garnish with a strip of orange peel — gently squeeze it over the glass to release the oils, then drop it in.
Tip:
For a smoother taste, use bourbon. If you prefer a bolder, spicier profile, go with rye whiskey.
