DUNJA MALBAŠIĆ – A SPARK FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR REPUBLIC

Every free moment should be devoted to the things we love, because as the years go by, memories will remind us that we did something meaningful for ourselves and did not waste our time in vain. These are the words of Dunja Malbašić, a second-year grammar school student at the “Petar Kočić” Secondary School Center in Srbac, whose passion for writing, dance, and volunteer work is shaping the foundations of a fulfilled and happy life.

At the recent literary competition “Preserving Memory from Oblivion”, organized by the Republic Pedagogical Institute, Dunja won third place with a piece dedicated to Natalie’s Ramonda—the flower of resurrection, a symbol of the victory of the Serbian army in World War I and a lasting reminder of the historical sacrifice of the Serbian people.

“I learned about the competition from my teachers and decided to try writing a piece. As I started researching the Ramonda, I was fascinated by its ability to rise again and how that can be linked to our people who, like that small flower, stand up again after every battle and hardship. The same applies to every individual,” Dunja explains.

Her mentors were history teacher Svetlana Milošević and Serbian language teacher Irina Nedimović, whose guidance and support played an important role in the creative process. Dunja also highlights the encouragement of her classmates, who shared her joy after the award, which came as a pleasant surprise

“The biggest challenge was reading and researching, because the topic is very heavy. It was emotional—I often sat and cried. What affected me most was the suffering, especially the loss of mothers and children, which became the focus of my work. It is important that we do not forget such horrors, and competitions like this help preserve the memory of important events and people from the past,” says Dunja, who recently recited her original poem “The Image of Saint Sava” at the Saint Sava Academy in Srbac.

Alongside her literary achievements, Dunja is also recognized for her dedication to community work.

She has been dancing since the age of seven and is now an active member of the Citizens’ Association “Cezar,” where she has participated in numerous competitions and won several awards. For her, dance is not just a hobby, but a way of life.

“Dance has always been my love. It’s my way of expressing myself and escaping everyday life. Rhythmic gymnastics is the most represented, but I enjoy all forms of dance,” says Dunja, who was also one of five representatives of Srbac at the regional music festival “Rhythm of Europe” in Prnjavor.

She is deeply committed to volunteer work and is currently active in three organizations—the Red Cross, the “Cezar” Citizens’ Association, and the NGO “Millennium.” Through her engagement, she has inspired many young people to follow a similar path, emphasizing that helping others is one of the most meaningful things a person can do.

“Through volunteering, you don’t just help your community—you meet new people, learn about yourself, and gain new experiences. For young people, it’s the best way to grow, build friendships, and shape their future. I see volunteers in Republika Srpska as one big family, where everyone supports and helps one another,” Dunja adds.

In her free time, she enjoys reading and is actively involved in her school’s journalism section, as well as in one of the programs on Radio Srbac.

“I consider myself someone who loves life and wants to enjoy it. Life is short and should be lived to the fullest. If I could, I would bring love back among people—to slow down a little, step out of the rush, and dedicate more time to one another,” Dunja emphasizes.

During her time at the “Dositej Obradović” Elementary School in Razboj near Srbac, Dunja was named Student of the Generation. She achieved outstanding results at municipal competitions, winning first place twice in mathematics, second and third place in physics, and second place in Serbian language competitions. After completing secondary school, she is considering studies in architecture or medicine, while still carefully reflecting on her final decision.

With her talent, dedication, and strong sense of social responsibility, Dunja Malbašić stands out as a young individual whose energy and values represent a true spark for the future.
