PLIVA – THE LARGEST SOURCE OF DRINKING WATER IN EUROPE

Emerging from the rocks beneath Mount Vitorog, near the village of Pljeva, three powerful springs release crystal-clear water that forms the Pliva River. Because of the abundance of its sources, Pliva is considered by many to be the largest drinking-water spring in Europe and the greatest tourist attraction of the municipality of Šipovo.

PLIVA – THE LARGEST SOURCE OF DRINKING WATER IN EUROPE
The right spring bursts from a massive rock at an altitude of 483 meters above sea level, while the left spring appears from a moss-covered scree slope at 489 meters. Together with several smaller springs, they create an exceptional natural and scenic complex that attracts large numbers of domestic and foreign visitors every year.
Many tourists find here an ideal place for rest and enjoyment in untouched nature.
It has been determined that the water of the Pliva springs originates from Glamoč Field and resurfaces beneath the steep slopes of Mount Jastrebnjak and Smiljevac. The river maintains a constant temperature of around 8°C, which indicates its long underground journey through great depths.
After about a twenty-minute walk along a narrow forest path, visitors reach the most impressive spring. In a confined space, water bursts from a huge rock, giving the impression that the river is being born at that very moment. From its very beginning, Pliva forms rapids and small waterfalls. The roar of the water echoes off the rocks and blends with birdsong, creating a powerful natural symphony that clears the mind and invites visitors to surrender to the beauty around them.
During hot summer days, the extremely cold water causes visible mist to rise, making it seem as if clouds have descended onto the river itself. This creates a unique atmosphere that leaves no visitor indifferent.
Just before the main spring, one must pass through the yard of a family home. The host asks only one thing of visitors – to enjoy the nature and leave no waste behind.
The other two springs are located on the opposite side, where the terrain is more accessible. Along the river’s course there are numerous houses and cottages, and several old watermills preserve the memory of earlier times. At the confluence of the two flows lies a tourist complex covering 6,800 square meters, with bungalows and ethno-style houses that attract nature lovers and anglers who stay here each year.
The Šipovo Tourist Organization emphasizes that Pliva is a river of exceptional clarity, distinctive color and rich natural value, offering something for everyone.
“The Pliva area forms a unique natural and tourist region. Its beauty and phenomena make it ideal for the modern traveler. Fishermen find clear waters rich in noble fish, hunters discover mountain hunting grounds full of wildlife, lovers of history are drawn by remnants of old settlements, and for fly-fishing enthusiasts Pliva is a small paradise on Earth,” they say in Šipovo.
Although the number of foreign visitors decreased during the coronavirus period, many people still come to the springs, mostly from nearby areas. Local residents say that visits are often one-day trips, but they are pleased that more people are discovering this region and its magnificent river.
Every year, numerous events are organized along the Pliva River. Despite some cancellations in recent times, efforts continue to improve tourist content. Visitors can enjoy kayaking and canoeing, while cyclists and runners have arranged trails at their disposal. The largest event held here is called “Weekend on the Pliva.”
