FAMILY KOLO DANCE AS A STAND AGAINST THE “WHITE PLAGUE”

On Saturday at 7 PM, the central square in Laktaši will host the fourth annual Family Gathering – a community event aimed at strengthening trust in the institution of the family and raising awareness about the alarming birth-to-death ratio in the Republic of Srpska.

Unlike previous years, where the event included a symbolic walk through town, this year’s gathering will feature a large kolo – a traditional circle dance – as a symbol of unity and support for family values.

"We are facing a harsh reality where families with two children are becoming rare. The Association ‘Four Plus’ may soon have to rebrand to ‘Three Plus,’ which is a deeply troubling sign of the times,” organizers stated.

They criticized the current level of state support for families as insufficient and often humiliating.

“We expect our elected officials to take demographic issues seriously. Combating the decline in population must become a national priority,” the statement continued.

The organizers further pointed out that the fear of an uncertain future is one of the biggest obstacles preventing young couples from having children. They emphasized that institutions must take responsibility and create conditions in which families feel encouraged and protected.

“If we do not turn toward our children and families now, in 20 years we will face consequences that will alter the very face of our towns. That’s why it’s critical that institutions act swiftly to stimulate birth rates,” they warned.

The Family Gathering program will also feature cultural and artistic performances to celebrate and promote family life.
