Every year around this time, the price of live piglets starts to rise, and by all indications, this year it might reach a record high by Đurđevdan.
According to pig breeders, the reason lies in unprecedented demand and a very limited supply. Breeders warn that the price around Đurđevdan will likely be the highest ever recorded.
"On farms, piglets are priced around 8 KM per kilogram, while higher prices that people encounter are usually from resellers. However, the fact is that prices are on an upward trend, which is expected to continue," Mišo Maljčić, president of the Pig Breeders Association of Srpska, told Srpskainfo.
According to him, the price increase is driven by the imbalance between supply and demand, which has never been this extreme before the holidays.
"Currently, piglets are in high demand for fattening. On the other hand, demand will be further boosted by both Orthodox and Catholic Easter, May Day, Đurđevdan, and Markovdan—occasions when this type of meat is highly sought after," Maljčić emphasized.
He added that the shortage on the domestic market will not be resolved through imports, since imported piglets must undergo expensive and time-consuming checks to rule out diseases like foot-and-mouth disease.
All of this, he says, are the current reasons driving up prices.
