HERZEGOVINIANS BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT AT THESE POPULAR LAKES

As temperatures soar during the summer months, locals in Herzegovina — along with an increasing number of tourists — are flocking to the region's picturesque lakes in search of refreshment, recreation, and a connection with nature.

HERZEGOVINIANS BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT AT THESE POPULAR LAKES

The Trebinje Danas portal has compiled a list of the most beloved swimming and leisure spots across Herzegovina, showcasing the region’s natural gems.

In the municipality of Gacko, two lakes stand out as top destinations: Lake Klinje and Lake Desivoje.

“Their popularity stems largely from their convenient location along the main road, making them perfect rest stops for travelers in transit. Many are pleasantly surprised by the lakes' beauty,” said Jelica Kovačević, director of the Gacko Tourist Organization, in a statement to Trebinje Danas. “With covered resting areas, a maintained beach, and parking facilities, Desivoje has become increasingly attractive — not just to passersby, but also to visitors who decide to spend their holidays in Gacko.”

Desivoje Lake comes alive in the summer with a variety of events under the banner of the “Cultural and Sports Summer” festival, including sailing and water polo competitions that enrich the local tourism offer. Meanwhile, Lake Klinje remains loyal to its tradition, hosting the ever-popular “Water Diving Show,” featuring spectacular jumps from the oldest arch dam in the Balkans.

A similar story is unfolding in Bileća, where the lakeside oasis of Čepelica has become a go-to summer escape just five kilometers from the town.

“Čepelica is one of the most well-known and frequently visited swimming spots on the shore of Lake Bileća. It offers a perfect mix of natural beauty, peace, and recreation,” said Tamara Tabaković, director of the Bileća Tourist Organization. “Floating rafts are especially popular among young people — ideal for sunbathing, diving, socializing, and enjoying untouched nature.”

Lake Bileća is also gaining attention from fishing enthusiasts. The traditional Somovijada catfish fishing competition brings together anglers from across the region, all competing for the title of “Biggest Catfish.” Some catches have reportedly reached up to 100 kilograms.

“Lake Bileća, with swimming spots like Čepelica, clean waters, a pristine setting, and options for active relaxation, is becoming a sought-after destination not only for locals but also for visitors from the entire region,” Tabaković emphasized. “This growing interest proves that domestic tourism holds great potential and that natural treasures like Lake Bileća deserve more attention, promotion, and investment.”

Whether you're drawn to adrenaline-pumping dives, peaceful sunbathing, exciting fishing competitions, or a simple refreshing swim, Herzegovina’s lakes offer something for everyone. The tourism potential is immense — and with a bit more care and investment, these natural destinations could truly shine.
