This now well-recognized event once again promises a blend of taste, tradition, and vibrant energy, bringing together winemakers, wine lovers, and visitors from across the region.

The festival was launched at the initiative of Ognjen Vučenović, a young sommelier from Mrkonjić Grad, who gained extensive knowledge of wine during his travels around the world and became one of its most passionate promoters.

It was Ognjen’s idea to organize an event in his hometown that would connect wine, culture, and history. His proposal was quickly embraced, as historical records show that this region once had a strong winemaking presence.

The oldest and only known written record dates back to 1660, when renowned Ottoman travel writer Evliya Çelebi passed through what was then called Varcar Vakuf. He described the town as having eleven neighborhoods, with houses surrounded by vineyards and gardens, a pleasant climate, and a lively trading spirit.

"Çelebi’s notes are evidence that viticulture was once part of our everyday life and economy. The festival is an attempt not only to revive that tradition, but also to enrich it in a modern way," say the organizers.

Part of the “Mrkonjić Summer 2025” program, the festival is organized by the Petar Kočić Cultural Center, with the support of the Municipality of Mrkonjić Grad.

This year’s edition will feature a rich program, including wine tastings from local and regional wineries, a variety of culinary offerings, and a cozy open-air social setting. A large number of visitors is expected, as the festival continues to grow into a major event on Mrkonjić Grad’s cultural and tourist calendar.

According to the organizers, the Wine Festival is not just a celebration of flavors – it is a celebration of identity and heritage, rediscovered and honored anew.
