COULD EUROPE SOON FACE TEMPERATURES ABOVE 50°C?

Europe could experience temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in the near future, according to French climatologist Christophe Cassou, who warns that the question is no longer whether such an event is possible, but when it will happen.

COULD EUROPE SOON FACE TEMPERATURES ABOVE 50°C?

Cassou, Research Director at France’s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), told BFM TV that the risk of another major heatwave this summer is high and that extreme heat events will continue to become more frequent and more intense.

“These heatwaves will become stronger, and very high temperature thresholds will be exceeded,” Cassou said.

He added that temperatures reaching 50°C could occur as early as August, stressing that such an event might happen this year, in two years, or within the next decade.

Preparing for Climate Extremes

According to the French climate expert, societies across Europe must prepare for increasingly severe weather events as the effects of climate change become more pronounced. He emphasized that adapting infrastructure, public health systems, and emergency response plans is becoming an urgent priority.

His warning comes amid growing concern over the continent’s rapidly warming climate and the increasing frequency of record-breaking heatwaves.

Europe Under Intense Heat

A powerful heatwave sweeping across Western and Central Europe has brought exceptionally high temperatures, fueled by hot air masses moving north from the Sahara Desert.

Spain has been among the hardest-hit countries, with authorities reporting more than 200 possible heat-related deaths, while several European nations have already broken June temperature records.

Record Temperatures Across the Continent

Germany is expected to experience the peak of the current heatwave, with temperatures forecast to reach 39°C, while some regions could exceed 41°C during the weekend.

Italy has issued red heat alerts in 17 cities, as meteorologists predict temperatures will continue rising under the influence of a strong African anticyclone.

Extreme heat has also affected the Netherlands, where a new temperature record for June 24 was set. Meanwhile, parts of the United Kingdom have faced a combination of scorching temperatures, tropical nights, and severe thunderstorms.

Meteorologists warn that temperatures could surpass 40°C in several parts of Europe in the coming days, underscoring the growing impact of extreme weather linked to a warming climate.
