The maidenhair fern, also known as Lady's hair or female hair, is an endemic species of fern most commonly found in the springs of Višegrad Spa in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This plant captures attention with its heart-shaped leaf
form, unusual green color, and stems resembling the hair of fairies who bathed
in these mineral springs.
Legend has it that fairies enchanted this area, leaving
behind their strands of hair for young men who secretly watched them bathe.
It is believed that numerous soldiers and workers who built Mehmed Paša Sokolović's building near the springs used the maidenhair fern to heal severe wounds.
The therapeutic thermal waters of Višegrad Spa have been around
for over 38,000 years, with springs reaching depths of 180 meters and water
temperatures ranging from 31 to 34 degrees Celsius.
In terms of water radioactivity, this spa ranks first in
Bosnia and Herzegovina and second in the former Yugoslavia.
It is suitable for treating rheumatic, neurological,
orthopedic, gynecological, and geriatric conditions. It is also recommended for
the healthy as it slows down the aging process and boosts the body's
resistance.
