An exhibition titled “Serbian Painting at the Beginning of the 20th Century” will open on December 30, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Gallery of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of Srpska (ANURS) in Banja Luka.
According to the organizers, the exhibition will remain open until February 28, 2026, marking the beginning of ANURS’s exhibition program for the year 2026.
Through this exhibition, the Academy aims to preserve the legacy of 29 artists who were educated and created their work during one of the most challenging periods in Serbian history. Most of the featured artists completed their studies at prestigious European art academies in Vienna, Prague, Krakow, Munich, Budapest, and Paris.
Although the majority of the artists come from the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the inclusion of works by Paja Jovanović and Uroš Predić connects the broader Serbian cultural space and offers valuable insight into the importance of this historical period.
“This exhibition is being realized in cooperation with art collectors from the Republic of Srpska. Accordingly, the selection of artists and artworks was limited to pieces owned by these collectors. Through this exhibition, we also aim to highlight the importance of preserving and valuing this artistic heritage,” the statement from ANURS said.
The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the artistic legacy of Serbian painting at the beginning of the 20th century and to gain a deeper understanding of its historical and cultural significance.
