RISING PRICES OF ROAST FOR EASTER AND ST. GEORGE'S DAY

As Easter and St. George's Day approach, many find it increasingly challenging to celebrate with the customary roasted lamb or pig due to soaring prices.

RISING PRICES OF ROAST FOR EASTER AND ST. GEORGE'S DAY

The current cost of these holiday staples suggests that celebrations may be more modest this year, considering the expenses of other foods, drinks, and desserts typically enjoyed during festivities.

Gone are the days of affordable roasts on the table. In recent years, prices have steadily climbed, reaching their peak this season.

Just a fortnight ago, piglets were available for purchase at 10 KM per kilogram of live weight, but now, prices have skyrocketed to 15 KM, depending on the selling location and weight.

Farmers attribute the high piglet prices to the "African swine fever" outbreak. While the cost of lamb is also steep, it's not as exorbitant. According to advertisements on online platforms and social media, expect to pay between 10 to 12 marks per kilogram of live weight, a price that farmers deem reasonable given the upcoming holidays. They attribute the drop in demand to this trend.

Milan Ćirić, President of the Association of Sheep and Goat Breeders of Republika Srpska, recently informed "Glas" that they were selling lambs from mid-January to early April for 11 marks per kilogram of live weight, but the current price doesn't exceed ten KM.
