The largest city in the Republic of Srpska has been featured in the prestigious “Time Out” magazine as one of the most underrated European destinations for 2025.
Known for its history, cultural heritage, and relaxed atmosphere, Banjaluka ranks 15th on a list of destinations ideal for travelers seeking to avoid crowds and discover fascinating, lesser-known locations.
"If you're traveling on a budget, looking for peace, or simply desperate to see something new, these are currently the most underrated places in Europe, handpicked by the 'Time Out' network of travel writers," the list states.
The magazine compiled this list with the goal of showcasing cities and destinations that offer a unique travel experience but are still underappreciated in the tourism world.
At the top of the list is Ulcinj in Montenegro, described as offering a distinct atmosphere compared to the more popular northern areas of the country.
Alongside lesser-known European destinations like Plovdiv in Bulgaria and Aarhus in Denmark, Banjaluka has joined a prestigious circle that special-interest travelers should explore.
According to “Time Out” magazine’s analysis, Banjaluka stands out by providing the perfect balance between history, culture, and a laid-back lifestyle—all without the crowds that often characterize popular European destinations. The city, known for its peaceful environment and friendly people, offers visitors a chance to experience an authentic part of the Balkans, far from typical tourist routes.
“The absence of tourist crowds means you can take your time admiring the Orthodox Temple of Christ the Savior and the Ferhat Pasha Mosque, both of which were rebuilt after the conflicts and are part of a relaxed sightseeing program that spans 2,000 years of history, including the panoramic Kastel Fortress and Habsburg façades,” the magazine highlights.
What also makes Banjaluka attractive, they add, is its vibrant atmosphere.
“Lively café terraces are buzzing with people, and food lovers can enjoy numerous Balkan restaurants,” notes “Time Out,” adding that English-speaking staff are common in most hospitality establishments.
Another Balkan destination featured on this list is the Imotska Lakes in Croatia.
