FROM A HOBBY TO A THRIVING BUSINESS

Not everyone loves cacti, let alone enjoys touching them. Yet, for the brave few who embrace them, these hardy, low-maintenance plants can become a staple in their homes. For Zorica Toprek from Teslić, cacti have become much more than a hobby—they are now a thriving business.

Zorica started cultivating these resilient succulents eight years ago, almost by accident. Originating from the Americas and belonging to the family Cactaceae, her journey with cacti began as a small personal project but has since blossomed into a passion.

"It all began as a little hobby that later turned into a deep love for these plants. I have a large terrace at home that always seemed empty, and I wanted to fill it with something. I tried different plants, but nothing worked. After researching online and learning more, I decided to try cacti. One by one, they thrived on my terrace, and here I am today," says Zorica, whose cactus haven is affectionately named "Zokine Iglarije" (Zoka’s Prickly Creations).

FROM HOBBY TO BUSINESS

What started as a pastime has evolved into a small business over the past two years.

"I aim to make enough from sales to cover the costs of maintaining the plants and starting new ones. Everything has a price—the plants, pots, soil. To make my cacti unique and recognizable, I create my own pots, which attract people to take a piece of 'Zokine Iglarije' home," she explains.

Despite her passion, Zorica faces challenges in selling her cacti in a community unfamiliar with succulents.

"We live in a society where cacti and other succulents are not well-known. People often complain that they’re too prickly. Still, over time, my hobby has grown into a love for cacti, and I try to inspire others to appreciate and own at least one. They’re perfect for today’s busy lifestyle, requiring minimal attention," Zorica shares.

THE APPEAL OF CACTI

Zorica cultivates several varieties, distinguished by the number and type of spines. Some have sharp spines, while others are smooth or entirely spineless.

"Certain types can be propagated through cuttings, while others need to be replanted. Each has its own charm," she says.

Getting started wasn’t easy, especially when it came to sourcing seeds.

"When I began, it was very difficult to find seeds, and it still is in Bosnia. We have to order seeds from abroad, paying high shipping costs, so many people opt to buy plants instead—it’s quicker and more reliable," Zorica recalls.

Support from friends was crucial during her early days.

"I’ll never forget how friends helped me at the start. This is such a vast world where there’s always something new to learn. Everything I’ve achieved required knowledge and effort, but thanks to good people, I’m where I am today. Now, I can even gift fresh seeds from my plants to others starting out," she says proudly.

CONTINUOUS GROWTH

Cacti remain an endless source of inspiration for Zorica. Even after eight years, she continues to learn, experiment, and dream of expanding her business.

"Every day is an opportunity to discover more about these incredible plants. The journey isn’t over yet," she concludes.

With her dedication, creativity, and love for cacti, Zorica Toprek has transformed her terrace into a flourishing sanctuary—and a successful business that inspires others to embrace the beauty of the prickly plants.
