The Federal Hydrometeorological Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FHMZ) has announced that 2024 will be the hottest year on record in the country.
"Although there are just under 20 days left in the year, we can confidently say that the average annual temperature in Sarajevo for 2024 will be approximately 12.9°C (± 0.1°C). This is one degree warmer than last year, which itself was the hottest year since official measurements began," stated the FHMZ. For comparison, during the period from 1961 to 1990, the average temperature in Jablanica during its hottest year was 12.7°C.
The FHMZ also highlighted that, alongside 2024, the other five hottest years in Sarajevo since 1888 have been 2023, 2022, 2014, 2019, and 2018.
On a global scale, scientists from the European Union have confirmed that 2024 will be the hottest year since measurements began worldwide. Furthermore, exceptionally high temperatures are expected to persist at least through the first few months of 2025.
This unprecedented heat underscores the growing impact of climate change, raising concerns about its long-term consequences on both local and global levels.
