The Republic Hydrometeorological Institute of Srpska has issued an official warning regarding a sharp rise in temperatures and an intense heatwave expected to hit the region in the coming days.

According to their announcement, the weather in the days ahead will be marked by extreme heat and soaring temperatures. The forecasted maximum temperatures are as follows:

  • Friday, August 8 – Temperatures are expected to range from 31°C in the east to 37°C in the north, with higher-altitude areas reaching around 26°C.
  • Saturday, August 9 – Expected temperatures between 33°C and 39°C, with higher-altitude areas reaching around 29°C.
  • Sunday and Monday, August 10 and 11 – Temperatures could reach up to 41°C, with higher regions expected to be around 31°C.
  • From Tuesday to Thursday, August 12–14 – The heat will persist, with temperatures ranging from 31°C to 38°C, and 28°C in the mountains.
Based on current forecasts, localized cloud development with rain showers and thunderstorms is expected to begin on August 12 in the southern regions, and in other areas from the evening of Friday, August 15, continuing through the weekend of August 16 and 17.

Due to the extreme temperatures, the Department of Civil Protection and the Professional Territorial Fire-Rescue Unit of the City of Banja Luka is urging citizens to take additional precautions, follow official recommendations, and refrain from lighting fires in open areas.

"Extremely high temperatures can seriously endanger human health. We urge citizens to avoid prolonged or unnecessary exposure to the sun, wear light clothing and footwear, and stay hydrated to prevent heatstroke or sunstroke," the Civil Protection Department stated.

The department also issued an appeal to employers to ensure proper protection for workers performing duties outdoors.

Moreover, due to increased risk of wildfires, citizens are strongly advised not to light fires outdoors and to strictly follow safety guidelines in order to protect both themselves and the environment.

In addition, an appeal has been made to all water consumers to use water responsibly and sparingly, prioritizing drinking water only for essential needs, and showing solidarity in times of high demand.

Considering the serious health risks posed by extreme heat, it is crucial to follow the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Republika Srpska to stay safe during this period.
