Nestled in the southeastern part of Herzegovina, in the municipality of Nevesinje, lies the stunning plateau of Morine, also known as the "Tibet of Herzegovina."
Covering an area of approximately 5,000 hectares, this vast mountain pasture offers breathtaking landscapes, untouched nature, and a glimpse into a centuries-old pastoral lifestyle.
Morine is best known for its endless grasslands, where, during the summer, shepherds bring their flocks to graze, continuing traditions that have existed for generations. However, winter turns this place into a harsh and inhospitable land, with heavy snowfall and fierce blizzards. The unpredictable weather of Morine is legendary – on June 9, 2005, snow unexpectedly fell, temperatures dropped below freezing, and shepherds had to rush their flocks to lower altitudes.
Beyond its natural wonders, Morine is steeped in history and legend. The most famous tale is that of the Wedding Cemetery (Svatovsko groblje), where, according to local lore, an entire wedding party from the noble Lakišić family of Mostar perished in a sudden snowstorm in the 18th century. This eerie yet fascinating story, combined with the plateau’s raw beauty, adds an air of mystery to Morine.
For adventurers, nature lovers, and history enthusiasts alike, Morine is a must-visit destination. Whether you seek to explore untouched landscapes, experience the spirit of the past, or simply enjoy the tranquility of the vast open space, Morine promises an unforgettable experience.
