There's nothing worse than eagerly slicing into a watermelon only to find that it’s neither sweet nor juicy.

Logically, the best way to be 100% sure you've picked the right watermelon is to open it up and taste it. However, this is usually not possible before buying, and many swear by the tried-and-true method of tapping. Yet, there are no guarantees that this method won't fail. Therefore, we suggest you forget about the "magic tapping" and turn to natural solutions.

First – if you notice a spot on the surface of the watermelon, that's a good sign. It indicates the spot where the watermelon lay on the ground while ripening, reports Avaz. The ripest watermelons have a yellowish spot, while those with white or light green spots should be avoided as they were picked before ripening. It's advised not to buy a watermelon that has no spots on the surface.

Second – regarding the rind, the surface of the watermelon should be dark green, hard to the touch, smooth, and without visible damage. A soft surface is a reliable sign that the fruit has started to rot, and you should also avoid watermelons with a dried-out surface that has lost all its juiciness and sweetness. The fruit should be symmetrical.

Third – combine a bit of arm exercise with refreshment during the heat. Surely no one wants to carry heavy watermelons home, but keep in mind that 92% of a watermelon is water. Therefore, the juiciest fruit is also the heaviest. Lift several watermelons of similar size and buy the heaviest one.
