NEW RULES FOR TOURISTS IN ROME

Rome has installed a pedestrian bridge over the Trevi Fountain so that tourists can still visit the world-famous attraction while it is undergoing restoration.

NEW RULES FOR TOURISTS IN ROME

The fountain has been drained, and the lower section of the basin is cordoned off, which may disappoint visitors.

To still provide access to the fountain, completed in 1762 and adorned with intricate sculptures of mythical sea creatures, the city council in Italy's capital has set up a walkway and a small temporary basin for tourists who wish to toss coins.

City officials hope to use the pedestrian bridge to monitor the number of tourists visiting the attraction after years of overcrowding. The results will help inform future measures, such as restricting access to the fountain steps and introducing a small entrance fee.

While access to the bridge is free, the traditional coin-tossing in the main fountain is prohibited during the renovation, with a €50 fine for those who ignore this rule.
