Sweet wormwood, a herbaceous plant native to Asia and Eastern Europe, has long been revered for its medicinal properties. With approximately 480 species worldwide, only 15 varieties are found within our region.
Among these, sweet wormwood, also known as Artemisia annua, has found a habitat in the Herzegovina region, where it is renowned for its therapeutic effects on gallbladder, stomach, and liver ailments. German researchers have now uncovered its efficacy in combating the COVID-19 virus.
Studies conducted at the Max Planck Institute in Potsdam, Germany, have astonished scientists by revealing that extracts from sweet wormwood exhibit activity against SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.
Beyond its medicinal potential, sweet wormwood can be cultivated for ornamental and aromatic purposes. It thrives in rock gardens, vertical walls, rooftop gardens, and various containers, making it a versatile addition to any setting. This breakthrough offers new hope in the global fight against the pandemic, highlighting the invaluable contributions of traditional medicinal plants in modern healthcare.
