OSMAN-PASHA MOSQUE: A SYMBOL OF ORIENTAL ARCHITECTURE IN TREBINJE
The Ottoman Empire introduced Islam as the dominant religion in these regions. During that period, some of the most monumental structures of Oriental culture and civilization were built. One such example is the Osman-Pasha Mosque in Trebinje.
Built in 1726, it was founded by Osman-Pasha Resulbegović. The mosque is located near the western gate and the walls of the Old Town. It was constructed by Dubrovnik craftsmen using finely carved stone. Along its right wall stands a 16-meter-high octagonal stone minaret.
In its immediate vicinity, there are a maktab (Islamic elementary school) and a madrasa (Islamic high school), which are considered the first educational institutions in Trebinje.
This mosque is one of the most spacious in Herzegovina, incorporating elements of Mediterranean architecture. Before the last war (1991–1995), it was protected as a cultural monument. After being destroyed during that period, it was reconstructed in 2005.
The current structure is a faithful reconstruction of the original, maintaining its authentic dimensions and materials. Today, it is included on the Provisional List of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
