The Easter Fast consists of seven strict weeks, each carrying specific rules that should be observed.
First week of Easter Fast: Clean Week
This week is also called Theodore’s Week. During the first days of this week, fireplaces are not lit, and women should not cook but rather eat previously prepared food.
Second week of Easter Fast: Pačista Week
During the second week of the Great Fast, fasting on water is observed from Monday to Friday, while on Saturday and Sunday, it is allowed to eat food prepared with oil.
Third week of the Fast: Cross Veneration Week
During the third week of the fast, Orthodox Christians venerate the Holy Cross. This week should be dedicated to resisting all spiritual temptations.
Fourth week of the Fast: Mid-Lent Week
During this week, one should refrain from speaking harsh words, even in jest, and focus on work.
Fifth week of the Fast: Silent Week
This week is named so because a significant time in fasting has passed, bringing a period of silence and repentance. During Silent Week, the Church forbids all celebrations, music, singing, and entertainment.
Sixth week of the Fast: Palm Week
Plants and flowers play the most significant role during this week. According to tradition, nothing that blooms should be sown during this time, as it is believed it will remain fruitless. It is customary to weave wreaths from willow branches and flowers.
Seventh week of Easter Fast: Passion Week
The final week before Easter is spent in strict fasting, prayer, and repentance.
