It is believed to protect the home and its inhabitants, warding off evil forces and demons. It is customarily kept until the next Good Friday, serving as a guardian of the household against all adversity.

What happens to last year's Guardian Egg?

Once a new Guardian Egg is colored, the old one is thrown into a river, symbolically carrying away all misfortune and calamity that might have befallen the home it safeguarded.

Alternatively, for those with yards, there's a tradition of burying last year's Guardian Egg beneath a tree, believed to enhance fertility and shield the household from inclement weather.

The Guardian Egg is believed to bring prosperity and happiness to the home, leading many to keep it in ornate decorative containers.
