The surroundings of the "Tišina" Protected Habitat near Šamac are widely known for an ancient craft – basket weaving. Today, in the villages of Tišina, Tursinovac, and Grebnice, about a dozen people still practice this traditional skill.
The product range of basket weavers from the "Tišina" area includes classic and specialized baskets (for flowers and floral arrangements, firewood, mushroom picking, laundry, pets, etc.), as well as decorative items such as dollhouses, personal storage baskets, toys, and more.
In addition, they produce woven items for various purposes, including pictures, bottles, containers, wicker-covered brandy carboys, as well as basketry furniture like tables and chairs.
"The products are ecological and fully biodegradable, and they are all made in the traditional way, using techniques that have remained unchanged for a hundred years," state representatives from the Society for Research and Protection of Biodiversity.
In the past, the Posavina region was home to the largest plantations of basket willow in Europe, which covered as much as 230 hectares in the Šamac area. High-quality wicker products woven by Posavina masters once conquered markets across the former Yugoslavia and were exported to Europe and America.
