MEDICAL STUDENTS ORGANIZE LECTURE ON BREAST CANCER PREVENTION

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, eleven women lose their lives to breast cancer every week. Despite the existence of preventive programs, breast cancer remains by far the most common and deadliest cancer among women in the country.

For this reason, medical students, in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Zdenka Gojković, have organized a lecture dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of breast cancer. Women who have battled the disease, members of the “Iskra” Women’s Association, will also share their personal experiences during the event.

“It is important to emphasize that every woman between the ages of 50 and 70, according to official guidelines in the Republic of Srpska, should have a mammogram every two years. Women with a family history of breast cancer should begin regular screenings earlier, starting at the age of 40. Unfortunately, participation rates are not at a satisfactory level, and the goal of this lecture is to raise awareness about the importance and necessity of regular breast examinations,” said Nemanja Rodić, a medical student.

The lecture will be held on Monday, October 27, in the Amphitheatre of the Faculty of Medicine, located at Save Mrkalja 14, starting at 6:30 PM.

“The lecture is open to all citizens, without exception. Some of the attending women will receive free ultrasound or gynecological examinations. In addition, all participants will be trained on how to perform a breast self-exam — the first and most important step in maintaining reproductive health,” said Iva Matijević, National Coordinator for Sexual and Reproductive Health within the medical students’ organization SaMSIC.
