The summer reading campaign “The Summer's Top Young Reader”, organized by the Children’s Library of the East Sarajevo Main Library, concluded with an award ceremony for children who read the most books during their school break. The event was held as part of the “Children’s Day” celebration in East Sarajevo.
The initiative, aimed at promoting books and the joy of reading among children, has been successfully organized for many years. Librarian Stanka Ždrale told Glas Srpske that this long-running competition is a powerful motivator for young readers.
"Through workshops and various activities, we encourage children to read. The workshops are free of charge, and our goal is to spark their interest in reading and learning," said Ždrale.
The competition was divided into three age categories:
In the category of students from grades 1 to 4, Petar Govedarica won first place with an impressive 55 books read.
Among students from grades 4 to 7, Iskra Šoša took first place with 34 books.
In the grades 7 to 9 category, Helena Miladinović was the top reader.
Petar Govedarica, a third-grade student at "Sveti Sava" Elementary School in East New Sarajevo, shared that his favorite book is "Diary of a Wimpy Kid."
The Children’s Library holds a collection of over 15,000 titles and serves more than 3,000 members. It regularly hosts creative and educational workshops that foster a love for books and the written word. The library also organizes author visits and literary events.
During the award ceremony, the young participants presented a special artistic program to delight their parents and guests, showcasing just a glimpse of what they had prepared for the occasion.
The East Sarajevo Main Library also announced its upcoming Open Doors Week, which will take place from October 6 to 10. During this period, visitors will enjoy full-day access to library services, with promotional membership fees set at just five convertible marks. For pensioners, membership registration will be completely free.
“Our goal is to bring our services closer to the community, to raise awareness of the library’s role in the cultural and educational life of East Sarajevo,” the library stated. High school students from East New Sarajevo and East Ilidža are expected to visit the library during the event.
