Five-year-old Mihaela Filipić from Šekovići is battling a rare and progressive disease that affects her entire body, and her only chance for recovery lies in treatment abroad. Her family is urgently appealing for help so Mihaela can travel to South Korea in mid-August.
Mihaela has been diagnosed with KMT2B-type dystonia, a severe neurological disorder that progressively affects the entire body, including speech.
Her father, Ranislav Filipić, told Srna news agency that Mihaela was a healthy child until the age of four. “Now she can barely walk, struggles to hold objects, has no stable balance, finds it difficult to chew and swallow, and her speech is reduced to just two or three hardly understandable words,” he said.
After a year of searching for treatment options across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Croatia, the family has exhausted all possibilities in the region. Unfortunately, her condition is expected to worsen. Recently, they discovered a specialized clinic in South Korea that has over 20 years of experience in treating dystonia.
“Unfortunately, we cannot afford the costs of this treatment on our own. A single trip to South Korea costs between €45,000 and €50,000, and Mihaela will need at least three such visits. The total expense is around €150,000, which is beyond our means,” Filipić explained.
The family has about two months to raise the necessary funds, with the first trip planned for mid-August.
Filipić is calling on all individuals who can and wish to help his family during this difficult time, so that Mihaela can have a chance at a better and healthier life.
