Radivoj
Korać, affectionately known as "Žućko," remains one of the most
iconic basketball players from the former Yugoslavia. A prolific scorer and
beloved athlete, Korać was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall
of Fame in Springfield last year – the highest individual honor in global
basketball.
His
legendary status was cemented long before his tragic death at age 31 on June 2,
1969. One of his most unforgettable achievements was scoring 99 points for OKK
Beograd in a European Champions Cup game against Sweden’s Alvik.
In
1972, FIBA honored Korać by establishing one of its three European club
competitions — the Radivoj Korać Cup. The competition ran for four decades, and
in 2003, Serbia renamed its national cup competition in his honor. The winner’s
trophy is uniquely cast from a mold of Korać’s shooting hand.
Radivoj
Korać was also the first athlete buried in Belgrade’s Alley of Greats. In
another historic tribute, OKK Beograd, the Yugoslav Basketball Federation, and
FIBA retired his jersey number 5 — the first jersey retirement in European
basketball history, back when numbers ranged only from 4 to 15.
In
2007, during the inaugural class of the FIBA Hall of Fame in Alcobendas, Korać
was among the first to be inducted, further solidifying his legacy as a true
legend of European and world basketball.
