Banja Luka’s Chess Club “Gambit” marked an important milestone on March 7 by organizing the 2026 Club Championship for registered members as part of the celebration of its 18th anniversary. The tournament gathered an impressive 69 players, while around 15 additional members were unable to attend due to justified absences, confirming the strong membership base and vitality of one of the region’s most active chess clubs.
The
title of club champion was successfully defended by FIDE Master Vlado Narančić,
who finished the tournament undefeated with eight points. Grandmaster Miša Pap
also scored eight points but placed second due to weaker tie-break criteria.
Third place went to talented junior Viktor Panić with 7.5 points, who was also
the best-performing player under the age of 18.
Thanks
to this result, Panić achieved a special distinction by winning a prize that
covers the costs of participating in the FIDE World Youth Championship, which
will take place in Vrnjačka Banja from April 15 to April 20, 2026. The award
includes accommodation, meals, and the entry fee, with a total value of 545 KM.
A rich program marking the club’s 18th anniversary
The
celebration of the club’s coming of age was organized through four chess events
that brought together club members, young talents, and chess enthusiasts.
The
program began on March 1 with a simultaneous exhibition by Grandmaster Miša
Pap, a member of the club’s senior team. This was followed by a seven-day chess
camp held from March 2 to March 8.
On
March 7, the club championship was played, while the same evening also featured
the jubilee 10th edition of the rapid tournament “Gambit Blitz 2026”.
A
special atmosphere was created by the elegant setting of the Milanović House in
the center of Banja Luka, where the competitions took place. Participants had
the opportunity to enjoy high-quality chess in a unique venue and festive
environment worthy of the club’s milestone anniversary.
Best performers of the championship
Behind
the top three finishers in the overall standings were Nemanja Šipka and
Radoslav Ćetojević with seven points each. Sixth place was taken by FIDE Master
Dejan Omorjan with 6.5 points, followed by Dušan Marković, Vladislav Pejić, and
Vladan Pejić, all with six points.
Medals
were also awarded in youth categories. In the under-20 competition, Viktor
Panić took first place, followed by Dobrica Šukalo in second and Aleksa Jovišić
in third.
In the
under-14 category, Nikša Bulatović finished first ahead of Danilo Račić and
Aleksej Banjac. Among players under 10, Đorđe Cvijetić won first place,
Aleksandar Mihajlović finished second, and Dušan Stojanović placed third.
The
best player of the “Bishop” group was Teodor Tramošljika, while Sergej Šurlan
achieved the top result in the “Rook” group. Viktor Panić also won the “Queen”
group.
The
tournament director was the club’s president Nemanja Šipka, while the chief
arbiter was National Arbiter Aleksandar Gajić.
From an “unrealistic idea” to a thriving chess club
According
to the club’s president, the beginnings of Chess Club “Gambit” date back to February
2008, when the first steps were taken toward realizing a major vision for the
development of chess in Banja Luka.
“We
started with many goals that seemed unrealistic at the time. However, the most
important thing was believing that those goals could be achieved through daily
work and complete dedication. For 18 years now, we have been building the club
and developing young chess players,” Šipka said.
Today,
Chess Club “Gambit” is considered one of the most active chess organizations in
the region, with a large membership and a strong focus on developing young
talents.
