In the village of Prijevor, not far from Bileća, surrounded by the stone landscapes of Herzegovina and traces of centuries past, lie the remains of Predojević Church, a place associated with one of the most fascinating legends of this region.
Parts of the stone walls and a portal have survived to this day. Carved into the stone are three symbols: a cross, the sun, and a crescent moon. Nearby, there are also stećci - medieval tombstones that offer further testimony to the long and layered history of this area.
THE LEGEND OF HASAN PASHA AND HIS MOTHER
What makes this place particularly remarkable is a folk legend that has been passed down through generations.
According to the legend, the church was built by Hasan Pasha Predojević for his mother.
Tradition says that Hasan Pasha was taken from his homeland as a boy, when his name was still Nenad, and brought to Constantinople. There, he converted to Islam and, over the years, built a distinguished military and political career, eventually becoming known as Hasan Pasha Predojević.
Years passed, but the memory of his homeland never faded.
According to tradition, when he finally returned to Herzegovina after many years, he found his mother. She had remained faithful to her Orthodox Christian faith, and her son built a church for her as a symbol of his love and respect, and to mark their reunion after years of separation.
The church became known among local people as Predojević Church, bearing his name to this day.
A STORY THAT HAS SURVIVED THE CENTURIES
The legend goes even further. It says that Hasan Pasha built a mosque in Bileća, while for his mother he built an Orthodox church.
At places such as this, historical facts and folk traditions often intertwine. The story of the church’s origins should therefore be understood as a legend that has been preserved and passed down among the people of this region for generations.
This is not merely a story about a pasha and an old church. It is also a story from an era when children were taken away by the Ottomans - a story of a mother and son, separation and reunion, faith, belonging, and a homeland that is never forgotten, no matter how far life may take someone from the place where they were born.
Today, among the remains of the stone walls, the old portal, and the stećci of Prijevor, the memory of one of those remarkable Herzegovinian stories lives on - a story in which history and legend meet.
