MAJOR CHANGE AT AIRPORTS: PLASTIC-WRAPPING SUITCASES COULD BECOME A THING OF THE PAST

Wrapping suitcases in plastic film has been a common sight at airports around the world for years. Many passengers use this service for extra protection against scratches, dirt, accidental opening and other damage during travel.

However, this practice could gradually become a thing of the past. The reason lies in European regulations aimed at reducing the use of certain types of single-use plastic packaging.

CHANGES TO BE INTRODUCED GRADUALLY

The new rules will be introduced gradually, with the goal of significantly reducing plastic waste and restricting certain forms of single-use plastic packaging from 2030.

These changes could also affect plastic luggage-wrapping services currently available at many European airports.

Some airports have already started changing their policies. One example is Hanover Airport in Germany, where wrapping luggage in plastic film is no longer permitted, partly because of the amount of waste it generates.

PLASTIC FILM CAN ALSO CAUSE PROBLEMS DURING BAGGAGE HANDLING

Environmental concerns are not the only reason why this practice is being reconsidered.

During transportation, plastic film can tear or come loose from a suitcase, potentially interfering with automated baggage sorting and handling systems at airports.

As a more practical and environmentally friendly alternative, passengers are advised to use reusable protective suitcase covers or luggage straps, which can provide additional protection without generating unnecessary plastic waste.

After years of being an almost routine step before a flight for many travelers, plastic-wrapping suitcases could therefore become an increasingly rare sight at European airports.
