HERZEGOVINIAN EMBROIDERY IN THE HANDS OF NEW GENERATIONS

For two decades, the “Vasila” Association from Trebinje has been preserving traditional Herzegovinian crafts, including embroidery, sewing, weaving and crochet, while passing these valuable skills on to younger generations.

This year, the association implemented the six-month project “Preservation of Traditional Herzegovinian Embroidery Motifs,” supported through the Regional Programme on Local Democracy in the Western Balkans 3 (ReLOaD3), funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP in partnership with 14 municipalities and cities, including the City of Trebinje.

TRADITION PASSED ON TO YOUNGER GENERATIONS

As part of the project, 24 workshops were organized, covering traditional Herzegovinian embroidery, machine embroidery, digital embroidery motifs, sewing, tailoring of traditional costumes, drawing and painting.

A total of 30 participants took part, and their textile works, drawings and photographs were presented at a final exhibition at the Cultural Centre in Trebinje.

Among the participants was 11-year-old Nika, whose embroidery has already become part of traditional costumes and shirts. She especially enjoys donating her handmade pieces to humanitarian causes.

Although the workshops have ended, their impact continues. Several participants have decided to become members of the “Vasila” Association, bringing new energy and ideas to its work.

Through every stitch, pattern and handmade piece, the association continues to preserve a valuable part of Herzegovina’s cultural heritage and pass it on to generations to come.
