A major urban greening campaign has begun in Trebinje, with 230 native hackberry trees planted so far, and further planting set to continue after the Easter holidays.
Spasoje Radović, head of the Department for коммунal and inspection affairs, said that around 400 saplings have been procured, with planting locations spread throughout the city-from Banjevci to the city center, as well as along the bypass, in the Gorica neighborhood, and other areas where greenery is needed.
He explained that hackberry was chosen due to its resistance to drought and changing weather conditions, as well as its root system, which does not damage infrastructure-unlike some previously planted species.
Radović added that plane trees were avoided due to diseases that can easily spread and threaten existing trees, including the old plane trees that are considered a symbol of the city.
A new planting cycle is planned for the autumn, when experts will determine which additional species will be introduced.
