Near Banja Luka, the Kočić family from Stričići on Manjača has started breeding Tornjak dogs, achieving remarkable results in a short time.
The initiative was led by Mirko, a passionate enthusiast of this breed, who plans to build modern kennels in the near future, giving the breeding program a special shine.
Currently, the kennel is home to nine playful puppies, frolicking on open fields, bravely facing the harsh winter and predators that are increasingly descending into the village.
Tornjak – Guardian of Herds and Homes
The Tornjak is a Bosnian-Herzegovinian and Croatian breed, classified in FCI Group 2 (Pinschers, Schnauzers, Molossoid breeds, and Swiss Mountain Dogs), mountain type section. It is a strong, square-shaped, agile livestock dog, long-haired and robust, standing 65–70 cm for males and 60–65 cm for females.
Known for its calm, brave, and intelligent temperament, the Tornjak is loyal to its owner, cautious with strangers, and deeply affectionate with family. Highly trainable and quick to learn, it excels at guarding livestock and property.
Characteristics of the Tornjak
The Tornjak is a dog of strong and harmonious build, immediately conveying stability and reliability. Its head is elegantly elongated, with pronounced jaws and almond-shaped eyes reflecting intelligence and composure. The long, powerful neck ends in a luxurious mane, while the body expresses strength and resilience.
The tail is long and richly coated, carried high above the back in motion. Its dense undercoat and firm outer coat protect the dog from harsh weather. Strong, well-angled legs enable smooth and agile movement, giving the Tornjak a graceful yet commanding presence.
