The long-standing and beloved event "Summer on the Vrbas", one of the most recognizable symbols of summer in Banja Luka, is set to undergo a major transformation in 2026. With an entirely refreshed concept, expanded content, and a month-long schedule of events, this year's edition promises to be the richest and most dynamic in the festival's history.
In an
interview, Minja Šurlan, Director of the Banja Luka Tourist Organization,
revealed what residents and visitors can expect throughout July.
"We
are presenting our most ambitious edition so far. Our goal was to reposition
and refresh the event while preserving its authentic spirit. Visitors will
experience a completely new visual identity and organizational concept,
featuring a full month of cultural, sporting, entertainment, and tourism
activities designed for all generations," Šurlan said.
The
event officially begins on July 1 with a grand opening ceremony at the iconic
Kastel Fortress. This year's opening carries additional significance, as it
will also mark the official reopening of the newly restored Tower 1, one of the
fortress's most important historical landmarks.
"We
are extremely proud that Tower 1 will become one of the central venues of the
festival. The square in front of the tower will host the opening ceremony,
theatrical performances such as Banja Luka Stories, and the brand-new music
festival VibraSS," Šurlan explained.
A Wealth of New Attractions
Among
the most exciting additions to this year's program is the VibraSS Music
Festival, which will bring fresh sounds and a vibrant atmosphere to the city.
Wine enthusiasts will enjoy the Wine Festival, set in the picturesque
surroundings of the Stone House.
The
organizers have also introduced open-air theatrical productions, including the
premiere of "The Legend of the Vrbas Fairy", to be staged at Abacija
Beach.
Film
lovers have not been forgotten either. Four open-air cinema screenings are
planned, with two dedicated to children and family films and two evening
screenings intended for adult audiences.
A
completely new feature of the festival is the Day of Speleology, which will
combine educational activities with exciting demonstrations, offering visitors
an opportunity to explore the fascinating world of caves and underground
exploration.
Tradition Remains at the Heart of the Festival
Despite
the numerous innovations, the essence of Summer on the Vrbas remains firmly
rooted in tradition.
"All these new activities are meant to enrich, not replace, the traditions that have defined Banja Luka for decades," Šurlan emphasized.
The
festival will once again feature the legendary Diving Competition from the City
Bridge, accompanied by a fishing tournament, as well as the traditional Dayak
Boat Race, considered the central sporting event of the manifestation.
In an
effort to preserve this valuable intangible cultural heritage, visitors will
also have the opportunity to participate in the promotional program "Become
a Dayak Boatman for a Day," allowing both locals and tourists to
experience one of Banja Luka's most cherished traditions firsthand.
Positioning Banja Luka as a Premier Summer Destination
According
to Šurlan, the expanded festival program is part of a broader strategy aimed at
strengthening active and cultural tourism while promoting the Vrbas River as
the city's most important natural and tourist resource.
"With
such a diverse and attractive program, Banja Luka is positioning itself as one
of the region's key summer destinations for recreation, culture, and leisure.
Most importantly, all events are free of charge and open to the public,"
he said.
Šurlan
concluded with an invitation to citizens and visitors from across the region
and beyond:
"We
invite everyone to join us this summer, embrace the new rhythm of Summer on the
Vrbas, and create unforgettable memories along our beautiful Vrbas River."
