Nikola Tesla has symbolically “arrived” in Gradiška with the unveiling of a statue in the town square ליד the Cultural Center, marking a significant milestone – 100 years since the commissioning of the first steam power plant in 1926, which placed the city on the Sava River among electrified communities.
The
monument, dedicated to one of the greatest minds in history, is the work of
sculptor Bojan Mikulić. It presents Tesla in an unusual and striking depiction
– dressed in an elegant tailcoat, wearing a top hat, and holding a raised cane,
symbolizing the sophistication and visionary spirit of the era in which he
created.
Mayor
Zoran Adžić emphasized during the ceremony that the construction of the
monument represents a continuation of the city’s strategic efforts to preserve
the memory of key historical events and figures.
“Unveiling
a statue of one of the world’s greatest scientists and inventors is the best
way to mark this important jubilee. We want to highlight the events that shaped
our city, and electrification was certainly a turning point in the development
of Gradiška,” Adžić stated.
The first steam power plant in Gradiška began operations on April 17, 1926.
According to historical records, it produced between 50,000 and 60,000
kilowatts of electricity daily, which at the time was sufficient to supply
public lighting and the city’s most important institutions.
City
Manager Bojan Vujinović expressed special gratitude to Nikola Lončar, whose
foundation donated the statue.
Additional
thanks were extended to Milorad Arlov, who helped facilitate the initiative to
commemorate a century of electrification in Gradiška in such a dignified
manner.
