PRNJAVOR’S VUČIJAK STUD FARM SET TO GET NEW TOURIST ATTRACTIONS: 80 YEARS OF TRADITION AND A NEW TOURISM VISION

The Vučijak Stud Farm near Prnjavor, renowned for breeding Lipizzaner horses, is marking 80 years of existence, while new tourism and recreational facilities are being prepared to make the site even more attractive to visitors.

In addition to enjoying the beauty of these distinctive horses, visitors will soon have opportunities to relax, spend more time at the stud farm and enjoy a range of new activities.

According to Ranko Grubešić, acting director of the Vučijak Stud Farm, the institution has ambitious plans, although its financial resources remain limited, with between 200,000 and 300,000 BAM provided by the relevant authorities.

Despite these limitations, the stud farm is moving forward with plans to introduce new tourism content.

WALKING AND HORSE-RIDING TRAILS

Among the planned facilities are sports and recreational activities, as well as walking and horse-riding trails.

“We have developed plans for a number of sports activities, as well as walking and horse-riding trails. We need to connect this area with the nearby Kulaši Spa and with the many other natural potentials that remain underused in this region,” Grubešić told Nezavisne novine.

One of the immediate priorities is the introduction of basic hospitality services, allowing visitors to sit down and have a coffee — something that has not previously been available at the stud farm.

A children’s playroom is also being prepared, while the location will be suitable for team-building activities for smaller companies of up to 50 people.

“We are creating facilities that will primarily allow people who come to the stud farm to stay longer and spend a quality day here,” Grubešić said.

LONG-TERM PLANS INCLUDE ACCOMMODATION

The development plans extend beyond recreational facilities. Vučijak has already started projects involving cross-border cooperation with partners from Croatia.

One of the most ambitious ideas is the construction of between 120 and 150 accommodation units, which could significantly increase the number of visitors and turn the stud farm into a more complete tourist destination.

Vučijak has also been included among the investment projects of the Republic of Srpska, with a partner being sought through public-private partnership and concession models.

“A hotel and much more besides — that is simply the vision of how the stud farm and the surrounding area should develop, so that the facilities at the location offer much more than horse breeding alone,” Grubešić said.

80 YEARS OF THE VUČIJAK STUD FARM

The celebration marking 80 years of the stud farm is scheduled for September 15.

According to available historical records, Vučijak was established by a decree of the then Ministry of Defence. It was originally founded for the needs of the national army and was named after the nearby Vučijak hill.

Over eight decades, the stud farm has become closely associated with Lipizzaner breeding and has developed into one of the recognizable symbols of Prnjavor.

ONE OF PRNJAVOR’S BIGGEST TOURISM POTENTIALS

Prnjavor Mayor Darko Tomaš described Vučijak as one of the city’s major brands and one of the most significant tourism potentials not only of Prnjavor, but of the entire Republic of Srpska.

He believes that relatively modest investments could produce significant results.

“I believe that with minimal investment we can achieve a great deal. The people working at the stud farm, its management and the local community all have ideas about how this could become an important tourism attraction. What we need is support from higher levels of government,” Tomaš said.

He noted that such support has already included the rehabilitation of one facility, while further renovation and the development of tourism infrastructure are expected.

“The local community is ready to work on this. I am also grateful to the Government of the Republic of Srpska for recognizing the stud farm’s tourism potential and, in 2010, following a request from the local community, returning Vučijak to the ownership of the Government of the Republic of Srpska,” Tomaš said.

With its Lipizzaner tradition, natural surroundings and proximity to Kulaši Spa, Vučijak has the potential to become a distinctive rural and equestrian tourism destination, combining horse breeding with recreation, hospitality and accommodation.
