NOT A NEW TREND, BUT A TRADITION: HERZEGOVINIAN CUISINE AS THE FOUNDATION OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Herzegovina may not need to look far from its own tables for inspiration when it comes to a healthier way of eating. Many of the foods that are now considered staples of the Mediterranean diet have been part of Herzegovinian cuisine for generations.

Olive oil, collard greens, figs, legumes, seasonal vegetables and nuts are just some of the foods grown and produced in this region and they are precisely the foods on which the Mediterranean way of eating is built.

Local and Seasonal Come First

The Mediterranean diet is not a strictly prescribed menu, but rather a way of eating that places more vegetables, fruit, legumes and whole grains on the table, while meat and dairy products are consumed in moderation.

Herzegovina has almost ideal conditions for this type of cuisine — from fertile soil and a sunny climate to an abundance of local products that have been the foundation of traditional diets for centuries.

Olive Oil, Figs and Collard Greens

Olive oil is one of the hallmarks of Herzegovina, while figs and nuts have traditionally been an important part of everyday meals. Collard greens, prepared in numerous ways across Herzegovina, are another example of a food that fits perfectly into the principles of Mediterranean cuisine.

The Herzegovinian table therefore features many of the very foods that modern nutritional trends increasingly promote: simple, seasonal and locally produced ingredients.

A Tradition Becoming a Modern Trend

The advantage of this way of eating lies not only in its reliance on quality ingredients, but also in the simplicity of preparation. Vegetables, legumes, fish, olive oil, fruit and nuts can form the foundation of a varied and balanced diet.

Perhaps the real question, then, is not how Herzegovina can embrace the Mediterranean diet, but how many reasons we already have to preserve, and bring back to our tables, what has long been part of our tradition.

In Herzegovina, sun, soil and local produce come together in one place. Here, healthy eating is not a trend. It is a way of life.
