Dandelion, one of the most widespread meadow plants, plays a crucial role in supporting bee populations and honey production, according to the Pećanac Agricultural Estate from Bosanski Petrovac.
This perennial plant, with its distinctive golden-yellow blossoms, not only beautifies meadows and fields but also serves as one of the first and most important sources of food for bees in early spring.
“Dandelion is irreplaceable during the period when other sources of nectar and pollen are scarce. Its nectar is rich in sugars, while the pollen contains proteins and other essential nutrients vital for the development of bee brood,” state representatives from the Pećanac Estate.
They emphasize that even when the dandelion does not produce nectar, it almost always offers pollen, making it essential for maintaining healthy bee colonies. Without this plant, they warn, the development of bees before the main foraging season would be impossible.
Beyond its importance to bees, the dandelion also holds significant ecological and nutritional value for humans. Its presence contributes to preserving biodiversity and ecological balance, making it a true natural treasure of our landscapes.
The Pećanac Agricultural Estate calls for greater awareness of the importance of this humble yet powerful plant and stresses the need for its preservation as a prerequisite for bee health and successful honey production.
