In the village of Labucka near Lopare, on the slopes of Mount Majevica, Zdenka Mitrović and her family have transformed a simple hobby into a successful cheese-making business, preserving traditional recipes and winning gold medals for their products.
Together with her husband and two daughters, Zdenka has been producing traditional zarac cheese and Majevica smoked cheese for ten years. The family produces up to 200 kilograms of cheese per month, using fresh milk from their own cows.
TRADITIONAL RECIPES AND AUTHENTIC FLAVORS
The secret behind their products lies in high-quality milk, natural ingredients, and traditional preparation methods passed down through generations.
Zdenka learned the art of cheese-making from her mother-in-law. Every step, from heating and straining the milk to smoking the cheese over beechwood, is done by hand.
Alongside classic varieties, the family produces cheese flavored with garlic, chili peppers, olives, oregano, and chives.
Their products are increasingly popular among restaurants, retail chains, and customers from abroad.
GOLD MEDALS FOR HOMEMADE CHEESE
The quality of Zdenka's products has also been recognized at food fairs, where her traditional zarac and full-fat cheese won gold medals in Banjaluka.
Although her working day often begins at 7 a.m. and lasts until midnight, Zdenka says she would never exchange village life for the city.
She believes that growing interest in healthy food, traditional products, and rural tourism offers great opportunities for families living in the countryside.
With support from the Municipality of Lopare, the family has successfully promoted zarac cheese as one of the region's authentic specialties.
Zdenka's story proves that dedication, tradition, and hard work can turn a family passion into a successful business while preserving the unique flavors and heritage of Mount Majevica.
