Travellers around the world are increasingly seeking authentic experiences, natural beauty and lesser-known places away from overcrowded tourist hotspots. These preferences could shape global travel trends in 2027, bringing new destinations into the spotlight.
Expedia Group has presented its annual report on global
travel trends, “Unpack '27: The Trends in Travel”, based on a survey of 26,000
travellers, social media trends and data from the Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo
platforms.
The findings point to changing travel habits, with visitors
placing greater value on local culture, distinctive experiences and
opportunities to enjoy a destination without overwhelming tourist crowds.
10 DESTINATIONS EXPECTED TO ATTRACT ATTENTION IN 2027
According to Expedia Group's forecast, the following
destinations could gain popularity in 2027:
NATURE, CULTURE AND RELAXATION AWAY FROM THE CROWDS
Nature lovers are likely to be drawn to South Lake Tahoe,
known for its namesake lake and spectacular mountain scenery. Sedona, in
Arizona, attracts visitors with its striking red rock formations and
distinctive desert landscapes.
For a beach escape, the Mexican island of Holbox stands out
for its sandy shores and relaxed atmosphere. Punta del Este, in Uruguay, offers
a more upscale coastal experience, supported by well-developed tourism
facilities.
In Asia, Busan combines urban attractions, cultural
experiences and seaside scenery. Japan also features on the list, with its rich
traditions, historic architecture and cultural heritage.
European destinations include Perugia, Italy, renowned for
its medieval architecture and distinctive food scene, and Chichester in the
United Kingdom, which appeals to visitors interested in history, cultural
attractions and picturesque landscapes.
The list is rounded out by Tweed in Australia's New South
Wales, known for its natural beauty and coastal surroundings, and
Niagara-on-the-Lake in Canada, a historic town recognised for its vineyards and
proximity to Niagara Falls.
SHORT GETAWAYS EMERGE AS A NEW TRAVEL TREND
The report also highlights the growing popularity of
so-called “trip snacking” — short trips lasting just one or two days.
Rather than spending extended holidays at well-established
tourist destinations, travellers are increasingly opting for shorter stays
filled with meaningful experiences. These may include discovering local cuisine
and traditions, spending time in nature or exploring places beyond the usual
tourist routes.
This trend could create new opportunities for destinations
that have yet to become major tourism hotspots but offer authentic experiences,
unspoilt landscapes and a rich cultural heritage.
For destinations around the world, the shift represents an
opportunity to attract travellers looking for something different — places
where they can make the most of their time, discover local life and experience
a destination beyond the conventional tourist itinerary.
