Imagine a family lunch without mobile phones, social media or constant notifications. Instead of staring at screens, parents and children spend time talking, laughing and enjoying a meal together. This simple but inspiring idea has become the focus of a new initiative on the Italian island of Sardinia.
A one-month pilot project called "Screen-Free Lunch" has been launched in 15 restaurants across Sardinia, encouraging families to put away their phones and reconnect during meals.
The initiative was introduced by regional children's ombudsman Anna Cau and the hospitality association FIPE Confcommercio Sardegna.
How Does It Work?
The concept is simple and completely voluntary. Families are encouraged to put their mobile phones in bags or special baskets during lunch and dedicate their time to conversation.
To keep children entertained while waiting for their food, participating restaurants provide board games and other screen-free activities.
Parents also receive useful information and advice from pediatricians on developing healthier digital habits.
A Simple Idea Worth Sharing
The project was initially planned for eight restaurants, but growing interest expanded participation to 15 establishments across Sardinia.
According to the Italian Federation of Pediatricians, 95% of Italian teenagers regularly use smartphones, highlighting the importance of encouraging healthier relationships with technology.
Could This Idea Work in Republika Srpska?
The initiative could also inspire restaurants in Banjaluka, Trebinje, Bijeljina and other destinations across Republika Srpska.
With just a few board games, a basket for phones and a little creativity, restaurants could offer families something increasingly valuable – quality time together.
Sometimes, the best way to connect with the people around us is simply to disconnect from our screens.
