BANJALUKA BRINGS TOGETHER YOUNG ENGINEERS: STUDENTS TO TEST EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT STRUCTURES

Banjaluka will host RESIST, a regional competition bringing together civil engineering students from across the former Yugoslavia, from October 22 to 26, 2026. The event aims to encourage innovative solutions for designing and constructing earthquake-resistant buildings.

The initiative was launched by final-year civil engineering students from the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy at the University of Banjaluka, in cooperation with the Department of Mechanics and Structural Theory.

RESIST – Regional Student Innovation Competition in Seismic-Resistant Technologies is designed to connect future engineers, encourage knowledge exchange, and promote innovative approaches to safer structural design.

Invitations have been sent to 20 universities across the region, from Slovenia to North Macedonia, according to the Provjereno news portal.

REMEMBERING THE DEVASTATING 1969 EARTHQUAKE

The competition dates were chosen for a special reason. RESIST coincides with the anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Banjaluka in 1969, leaving a lasting mark on the city's history.

The event therefore carries an important message about the significance of earthquake-resistant construction, structural safety, and the professional responsibility of civil engineers.

PUBLIC TESTING OF STUDENT-DESIGNED STRUCTURES

One of the highlights of the competition will take place on October 26, when participating student teams will test physical models of structures they have designed and built.

The testing session will be open to the public, offering visitors an opportunity to discover innovative engineering solutions and see how the students' structures perform under simulated seismic loads.

Through RESIST, students from Banjaluka aim to establish their city as a regional meeting point for future civil engineers while highlighting the importance of science, innovation, and modern technologies in creating safer buildings and communities.
