Several hundred recreational riders, young people, experienced cyclists and the youngest residents of Šamac took part in a cycling event held as part of the “Šamačko Ljeto” summer festival.
The cycling event aimed to promote healthy
lifestyles, cycling and active time spent outdoors, while also showcasing the
tourism potential of the Šamac area.
Participants covered a route of approximately
16 kilometres, starting from the town square in Šamac. The route passed through
Pisar, Crkvina, Škarić and Tišina before the cyclists returned to the starting
point.
One of the event organisers, Aco Malić, said
similar cycling rides had been organised in Šamac around 15 years ago and that
the organisers were now working to revive the tradition.
“The idea came from local cyclists, with the
support of the Municipality of Šamac and local businesses. We also managed to
organise a raffle with prizes for the participants. Most importantly, we wanted
to involve children and help develop their love of cycling,” Malić said.
He expressed hope that the cycling event would become a traditional part of the Šamačko Ljeto programme.
Support for the event and the promotion of
cycling was also provided by Dr Jovan Živković, one of the most successful
ultramarathon cyclists in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2017, he completed a
remarkable 1,440-kilometre race, with the ride lasting 109 hours and 26
minutes.
Speaking about ultramarathon cycling, Živković
stressed that such demanding challenges require long-term preparation,
perseverance and considerable physical and mental strength.
“Any form of physical activity is important
for health. Cycling has been my great passion since childhood and I would
recommend it to everyone. This ride is an opportunity to pass my love of
cycling on to others, especially younger generations,” Živković said.
The Šamac cycling event brought together
participants of different ages and levels of experience, turning the streets
and surrounding countryside into a large outdoor celebration of cycling,
recreation and healthy living.
