Banja Luka has once again become the center of European rafting as the European Rafting Championship “Banja Luka – Vrbas 2026” officially opened on the banks of the Vrbas River.
Until May 30, the city will host 38 rafting teams from 15 national teams across Europe, further confirming its place among the continent’s top destinations for international sporting events.
The championship brings together some of the best rafting athletes in Europe, while also showcasing the natural beauty of the Vrbas River and the famous Tijesno Canyon, known for their crystal-clear waters, wild rapids, and breathtaking landscapes.
President of the “Kanjon” Rafting Club, Aleksandar Pastir, said that Banja Luka has proven itself to be one of the world’s leading rafting destinations.
“With participants from 15 countries, four European Championships, and three World Championships organized here, Banja Luka has confirmed its status as the number one rafting destination in the world,” Pastir said.
Prime Minister of Republika Srpska Savo Minić stated that rafting is the best example of how teamwork and good organization can overcome the challenges of the wild Vrbas River.
“Previous competitions have shown that we have the capacity and that we are excellent hosts. I wish all participants good luck and a safe championship,” Minić said.
The event is not only an important sports competition but also a major promotion of tourism, nature, and adventure sports in Republika Srpska. Athletes and visitors from across Europe have the opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere of Banja Luka, its hospitality, and the spectacular landscapes surrounding the Vrbas River.
The opening ceremony was held at the “Kanjon” Rafting Center in Karanovac and attended by representatives of Republika Srpska institutions, the City of Banja Luka, sports organizations, and numerous guests.
With its combination of adrenaline, untouched nature, and international sporting spirit, the Vrbas River continues to position Banja Luka as one of the most attractive adventure tourism destinations in the region.
