Cabbage from Semberija, a renowned variety from the region, has officially earned its place in the Register of Geographical Indications.
This recognition confirms its unique qualities and reinforces its reputation as a product of exceptional value. The initiative to protect its geographical origin began nearly a decade ago.
The registration specifies that only the "Cabbage from Bijeljina" variety and hybrids with similar genetic traits, mineral content, and organic properties in line with product specifications can bear the name "Cabbage from Semberija."
Stevan Mesarević, an agricultural engineer, highlighted that Semberija has long been known for its cabbage production. The "Cabbage from Bijeljina" variety was developed in 1977 by the late agronomist Meho Hujdurović, whose family retains the intellectual property rights.
- Today, only one farm is licensed to propagate the seeds of this variety, which is distinguished by its high cellulose and sugar content. It is excellent for pickling and equally delicious fresh. Despite being pricier than other types, it remains a popular choice among buyers – Mesarević told InfoBijeljina.
Tradition and Challenges in Production
Cabbage from Semberija is cultivated on nearly 1,000 hectares, but farmers face challenges such as climate change, fluctuating prices, and labor shortages. Rade Jovičević, a prominent producer from Trnjaci, emphasized the importance of advanced agricultural techniques and access to water but noted the unpredictability of yields.
- One year, the cabbage thrives, while the next, we plow it under because the cost of packaging exceeds the product's value. Still, our tradition motivates us to persevere – Jovičević explained.
Export Potential
While most of the cabbage is sold at local markets, a significant portion is processed or sold as pickled cabbage made using traditional recipes without additives. The agricultural cooperative "Povrtlarstvo" from Donje Crnjelovo purchases about 1,000 tons annually, exporting it to Western Europe.
Farmers are optimistic that the geographical indication will improve their market position and boost both production and sales. With this recognition, cabbage from Semberija now has an opportunity to become even more prominent, not only regionally but also internationally, backed by the guarantee of quality that opens new market opportunities.
