Hidden on the southern slopes of Mount Bobija, in the municipality of Ribnik, Jama Ledana is one of the remarkable speleological sites of Republika Srpska, known for its impressive underground ice formations and unusual natural features.
With a depth of 72 metres, Jama Ledana offers a spectacular journey into the underground world of the Bobija mountain. Its entrance vertical leads to an impressive horizontal gallery, giving the cave a distinctive and fascinating structure.
The total length of its underground passages is around 180
metres, revealing a remarkable natural environment shaped over many years.
A UNIQUE ICE CAVE
What makes Jama Ledana particularly special is its enormous
mass of ice. The cave is considered the largest underground ice site in
Republika Srpska and is also among the largest of its kind in Bosnia and
Herzegovina
Inside the cave, dozens of layers of ice of different
thicknesses have formed spectacular frozen landscapes. Some of the ice
formations rise up to 15 metres, creating a scenery that resembles a frozen
mountain range deep beneath the ground.
ICE ONCE USED BY LOCAL PEOPLE
Jama Ledana also preserves an interesting part of the
history of local life.
The logs positioned at the entrance to the cave were once
used by local residents to remove blocks of ice from the underground chamber.
Before the widespread use of modern refrigeration, the naturally formed ice
provided an important resource for the local population.
This connection between the cave and traditional life makes
Jama Ledana more than just a geological attraction – it is also part of the
cultural heritage of the region.
PROTECTED NATURAL HERITAGE
Because of its exceptional natural characteristics and
significance, Jama Ledana is now protected by the Institute for the Protection
of Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage of Republika Srpska.
The cave has been classified as a Category III natural
asset, recognising its value as part of the natural heritage of the Ribnik
area.
With its spectacular ice formations, impressive underground
passages and fascinating connection with local history, Jama Ledana stands as a
remarkable example of the hidden natural treasures of Republika Srpska.
