The price per kilogram of live weight has reached 7 KM, while at the beginning of October it could be purchased for 4.5 KM. At the moment, it is still possible to find slightly lower prices, but it is clear that costs are climbing as the holidays draw nearer and demand for piglets increases.

As pig farmers have repeatedly emphasized, a significant price jump in Republika Srpska is expected from mid-December. At that time, they explain, public interest increases sharply, and the price will depend entirely on demand.

It is worth recalling that piglets are traditionally most expensive before Đurđevdan and ahead of Christmas, when prices often reach 12–13 KM per kilogram of live weight. After the holidays and feast days, prices begin to fall again.

“A more substantial price increase may occur from mid-December, specifically before the New Year and Christmas holidays, as well as the upcoming patron saint days. It is still too early to predict what the exact price will be,” the Pig Farmers’ Association of Srpska told Srpska Info.

Farmers have repeatedly stressed that higher Christmas-season prices help compensate for poor sales in September, October, and November.

“That is the reality, and in this way the market balances out. If there is no demand, there is no reason for prices to rise— and vice versa. It is inevitable, and citizens should not be surprised if the price reaches 10 KM around Christmas,” the farmers say.
