As the European City of Sport for 2024, Herceg Novi extends its support to Trebinje in its bid for this prestigious title for the upcoming year. This was the message following the meeting of delegations from the two sister municipalities.
In this context, the discussions between the President of
the Municipality Stevan Katić and the Mayor of Trebinje Mirko Ćurić focused on
sharing past collaboration experiences and plans for applying for new
cross-border projects.
According to Trebinje Mayor Mirko Ćurić, the title of
European City of Sport is highly significant, and the experience of Herceg Novi
will greatly aid in the application process.
"We believe that Trebinje has made significant progress
in sports infrastructure recently, and many children are involved in sports in
the city. Specifically, 2,500 children under 18 are engaged in sports. We have
numerous successful clubs in men's and women's basketball, handball, and
football. It's a fact that this requires effort and funding, but what is
crucial is that we have clubs with only Trebinje members competing at the
highest levels," he noted.
Mayor Ćurić's agenda also included a visit to the Olympic
caravan. President of the Municipality Stevan Katić mentioned that the
discussion aimed to support Trebinje in its bid for the title of European City
of Sport.
"I am pleased that Trebinje is a candidate for the
European City of Sport for 2025. I hope that next year Trebinje will achieve
this status, just as Herceg Novi has for 2024," he emphasized.
As part of the collaboration between the two cities, an initiative to establish an integrated border crossing was launched, with Ćurić reporting that the work is underway.
"We hope this will expedite the process, which is very
important. It's not just about solving the infrastructure to make it look good,
but to ensure it functions fully. Katić and I often communicate and intervene
as much as our jurisdiction allows, more so on a friendly basis, as it's not
within the local community's authority. In any case, we are understood, and we
seek nothing personal, only in the public interest. Similarly, we are aware
that each year, more people are visiting both Herceg Novi and Trebinje, which
is positive," Ćurić said.
All previous projects within the framework of international
cooperation have been very successfully implemented, which is why the two
cities have jointly applied for numerous international projects, Katić noted.
"We are participating together in these next calls,
which definitely confirms that the two closest cities, side by side in two
different countries, function together in an impeccable manner, and we will
continue our cooperation even stronger in the coming period," he
emphasized.
During the meeting, the continuation of cooperation in
organizing events to be held in Trebinje and Herceg Novi was also agreed upon.
