As autumn continues to display its most beautiful colors, the arrival of winter is slowly being felt in the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Skiing and winter sports enthusiasts are already dreaming of their first runs down snow-covered slopes, while ski resorts are preparing for the upcoming winter tourism season.
Jahorina, Bjelašnica, Igman, Vlašić, Kupres, and other mountain destinations are once again expected to be among the favorite choices for domestic and international visitors seeking a combination of sports, nature, relaxation, and excellent local cuisine.
Preparing for Winter and Awaiting the First Snow
Ahead of the ski season, special attention is being paid to slope maintenance, inspections of cable cars and ski lifts, preparation of snow-grooming equipment, and ensuring safe conditions for visitors.
On Jahorina, preparations for the 2026/2027 season began immediately after the previous season ended. Meanwhile, certain sections of the ski slopes on Vlašić were improved and expanded during the summer, and Bjelašnica has already launched advance sales of seasonal ski passes.
In addition to ski infrastructure, hotels, apartments, restaurants, and other tourism facilities are also getting ready to welcome winter visitors.
Light Snow Possible on Mountain Peaks
According to the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute, Bosnia and Herzegovina can expect changeable weather through the end of the week, with increasing cloud cover, rain, and falling daytime temperatures.
Light snowfall is possible on the highest mountain peaks on Saturday, signaling the approach of winter, although conditions are not yet suitable for skiing.
From Jahorina to Kupres – Winter Destinations for Every Taste
Jahorina has long been one of the region's most recognizable winter tourism destinations, known for its ski slopes, modern infrastructure, and wide selection of accommodation and dining options.
Bjelašnica and Igman attract winter sports enthusiasts, families, and day-trippers looking to enjoy a mountain getaway just outside Sarajevo.
Vlašić is particularly popular among families and recreational skiers, while Kupres, with its vast mountain landscapes and ski areas, remains one of the best-known winter destinations in western Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Winter activities are also expected at smaller ski resorts, which play an important role in local tourism and attract nature lovers.
The Mountains Offer Much More Than Skiing
Although skiing and snowboarding are the main reasons many tourists visit, a winter holiday in the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina offers much more.
Walks through snowy landscapes, sledding, relaxing by a fireplace, traditional local cuisine, and fresh mountain air attract even those who have no plans to put on skis.
There is still some time before the winter season officially begins, but the first signs of colder weather are already raising hopes that the mountains will soon be covered in their familiar blanket of white.
